Adjunct professors at East Tennessee State University have gone 21 years without given a pay raise. This has created a moral problem at ETSU. Adjunct professors are currently making poverty level wages for teaching hundreds of students. If you don't know what an adjunct professor is, let me explain. Adjunct professors are what the University considers "part-time professors." These professors are non-tenured track, which means they have no guaranteed job security, no benefits, and no yearly salary. What they do posses, however, is at least a M.A. in their respective field and the same passion that tenured professors have. Adjuncts are currently paid on average $1,950 per class they teach. They are only allowed to teach a maximum of 3 classes a semester, which means their yearly income, if they receive their maximum 6 classes per year (3 per semester, 2 semesters in a year), comes to an average of $11,700 (stats from ETSU Human Resources Department).
